A possibly amphibious wormlike animal of gigantic size was seen in various parts of Brazil during the 1860s. Late in the decade one Francisco de Amaral Varella saw something like a huge earthworm on the banks of the Rio das Caveiras.It was three feet thick and had a piglike snout on what was presumably its head. When the witness called out to his neighbors, the creature disappeared into the ground, leaving in its wake deep furrows about three feet wide.
